My big extended family1.GED Imported Successfully [16 July 2008]

The pages from your GEDCOM have been generated successfully. You may view them by launching the Family Tree Explorer and opening the family tree into which this GEDCOM was imported.

For questions or problems, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org.

Hello. I noticed you've just uploaded a rather extensive GEDCOM. I reviewed your contribution page and did some quick analysis. There appear to be about 300 internally duplicated family names (such duplication generally means you have multiple paths to common ancestors - something you should try to resolve in your GEDCOM if you plan to continue using it elsewhere), and about 1500 family names that duplicate families already present in werelate (something that just goes with the territory of uploading to a shared space effort). Since every duplicated family page implies at least two additional duplicated person pages, that puts the number of duplications up around 5000. On a good day, I can clear/merge about 100 duplicates, so there's about two months of work ahead getting your upload merged.

I don't mind working on the effort where your space overlaps my own, but before I start, I guess I would like to know if you're really serious about werelate.

Thanks...--Jrm03063 12:25, 16 July 2008 (EDT)

One more thing - I was perhaps overly negative in my prior remarks. Duplication is a fair bit of work to resolve, but it also generally means that you're getting a bunch of new information by piggy-backing on research that others have already done. It also means that any information subsequently added to those pages will benefit you without you having to do anything. I think it's a fundamentally better way to work, but there is a bump of up-front work to get converted to this environment.--Jrm03063 13:24, 16 July 2008 (EDT)

Hello? [18 July 2008]

I dropped a couple of messages on your talk page - was hoping you could tell me more about how you were planning to use werelate. Thanks!--Jrm03063 11:35, 18 July 2008 (EDT)
