My name is Enno Frank Borgsteede, and I live in the middle of The Netherlands. I'm researching the most important names in my pedigree, and I'm trying to figure out whether there is a link between the Borgsteede's in The Netherlands and North America, and the many more people named Borgstede (single E) in Germany and the U.S.A.

What I know now is that all Borgsteede's in The Netherlands and North America are related. Our common ancestor emigrated from the area of Bielefeld/Spenge in Germany to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, looking for work, in the early 18th century. His original name was something like Borgstede or Borgstedte, and we know that the double E in our current name is a Dutch adaptation.

Since the baptize records of Spenge were destroyed in a church fire shortly after he left, there is no trace that we can follow there. We do know however that many people bearing the name Borgstede in the U.S.A. have German ancestors. That's where this site comes in. If you know anything about Borgstede's coming from Germany, from harbors like Hamburg and Bremen, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Please note that most if not all notes and source citations are written in my mother's language, which is Dutch. I can translate things if you need more info, but my personal additions will mostly be in Dutch anyway.

This page is dedicated to my father. He started this research project in the early 90's of the last century.
