Description

This is the enumeration of Barton County, Kansas.

Roll 429 reproduces leaves 371-699 of the first (of eight) Kansas volume, including the schedules for the counties of Barton, Bourbon, Brown, and Butler. This census was the first United States census since the admission to the union of the State of Kansas in 1861. Barton County was created in 1867 and attached to Ellsworth County until certain conditions were reached. It wasn't fully independent until 1872.

The Page column of the table includes two items transcribed from the 1870 census schedules. The first number is the hand-written page number which begins with 1 on the first page of each civil division. The second number (in a bold font) is the folio number which appears on the recto of each bound folio page.

Column descriptions will be displayed on mouseover of each column number. Any text not transcribed or unreadable may appear as simply "~". Check marks (✓) have been used for the affirmative marks to make them easier to see on some computers; smudged marks may appear as "[✓]".

Note I found the settlers on Walnut Creek near the west line of Barton County
and I was not able to ascertain deffinitely if they were in Barton or Rush County
I also found two other settlers whom I had enumerated in the town of Elsworth
they having left their families at that place because of the fear of Indian difficulties
but had come out here with their horses & plows to prepare homes for themselves
and eventually for their families — This is a beautiful valley, good timber
and fine water all the settlers were congregated at one house

Note 2d. I traveled through this County with a strong escort of U S Soldiers to
protect me from hostile Indians who roam at will over these prairies
which ought to be the home of our people in the over crowded cities of the East
Z Jackson asst mar

Note 3d. As these settlers are but just comencing and have not yet raised any
crops I will make no agricultural report

I Z. Jackson asst mars. for the 41s Disct Kans certify that
the forgoing return was made according to Law and Instructions
