Abstracts of the following records were taken from Summers, 1929, based on his transcriptions of County Court Records for various Counties in south of Augusta. The records are those which feture persons named "John Maxwell". There seem to have been more than one John Maxwell in the area. Person:John Maxwell (88) is readily identifiable as one of the Gentlemen Justices of early Botetourt. Other records may be for his son John, and perhaps one or more other John Maxwells.

Source: Houston, et al. 1916 Gives the name as "Mary". The latter work also places this record in Rockbridge County, which had formed from Botetourt (in part) in 1778. South flowing Purgatory Creek has its headwaters on the modern Botetourt Rockbridge County line, about one mile from the headwaters of north flowing Cedard Creek where John also owned land. It might be useful to get a photocopy of the original record to check the spelling of the name.
