It will thus be apparent that the Grants of Administration run fairly regularly from 1638, with an interval from 1657 to 1661, to the year 1800. The lacunae in the series of Grants of Probate are from 1648 to 1652, 1654 to 1661, 1708 to 1712, 1721 to 1727, and 1730 to 1746 ; whilst the intervals in the series of Volumes containing Proved Wills alone are from 1654 to 1715, 1720 to 1727, 1730 to 1746, and 1749 to 1779.

The Original Wills in a great measure supply the gaps in the latter series.

On a comparison of the above Records with those detailed in the return dated 29 January, 1811, made by the then Deputy Registrar, Mr. Thomas Clark, to the late Record Commission (vide p. 272, Supplement to 2nd Report), it would not appear that the gaps, in the Administration and Probate Acts, which then existed, have increased. In the Marriage Licence Acts on the other hand it will be seen that there are chasms in the Archbishop's Grants from 1648 to 1661, and from 1672 to 1746. A comparison of these with the return of 1811, which noted gaps from 1697 to 1713, and 1741 to 1746, shows that there have disappeared since then, the licences from 1672 to 1697, and from 1713 to 1746. These gaps have been largely filled through the kindness of H. Farnham Burke, esq., Somerset Herald, who has kindly permitted reference to a copy which he possesses of a transcript of these Grant Books made by or for the late Sir William Betham (the reference to which I have marked by the letters B.C. (Betham's Copy)). The original transcript is understood to be in the Private Library of the late Sir Thomas Phillips, bart. J. Ribton Garstin, esq., D.L., who possesses extracts from this same transcript referring to the Marriage Licences of the clergy, very kindly lent them for insertion, but as they are covered by Mr. Farnham Burke's copies it was not deemed advisable to make two references, but thanks are not the less due him. It has been necessary to put the references to the Betham Copy and to the [page viii] Diocesan Title Book, 1638–1648, for the letters A and B, as addenda to this Index, commencing at page 943. Any entries in the Betham Copy which are also in the Original Records, either in the Grant Books or amongst the Marriage Licence Bonds, are not repeated in the Addenda.
