Discussion

The following represents:

A register of the persons who have been either killed, wounded, or taken prisoners by the enemy, in Augusta county, and also such as have made their escape.

Most entries are for areas southwardly of the James, extending as far south as the Holston Watershed in Southwest Virginia. The list, known as the Preston Register, is thought o have been authored by Colonel Preston, though Waddell notes that there are spelling errors in the names of individuals that Preston himself would not have been likely to make. The original of the list is one of the items in the Draper Manuscript Collection.
