Template talk:Googlemap

In light of the implementation of the <googlemap>fjda;jfd</googlemap> solution described at Help:FAQ#Can I embed a Google Map on a page? (and appearing on the Main page), should this template be a) deprecated, b) replaced by bot with the tag-based solution and c) eventually deleted? I'm not a deletionist, just interested in whether you would advocate no longer using it and eventually bringing it to the end of its life cycle. --ceyockey 20:30, 18 July 2011 (EDT)

Deprecating it seems like a good idea, and since only about 75 pages use it, we could at some point edit those pages to use the new template and then delete this one. I'll add this to the list of things I give to my children to do when they want to earn money :-).--Dallan 13:10, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
Maybe a brief page entitled WeRelate ToDo/Deprecated templates placed into the category Category:WeRelate ToDo would be useful to provide a) explanations about why particular templates are considered deprecated and b) a watch target for habitual cleaners. If you agree, I'll compose one. --ceyockey 20:48, 19 July 2011 (EDT)
Yes, please do - thank you!--Dallan 21:14, 21 July 2011 (EDT)
How does this look .. a lightweight documentation and review process → WeRelate ToDo/Deprecated templates. --ceyockey 00:10, 22 July 2011 (EDT)
P.S. Have added the page to Category:Templates and have added a no-include hatnote to the template itself; if the no-include hatnote is generally OK, could create a template which delivers this message. Also ... need to figure out where to advertise the page so that sufficient eyes fall on it to have relevant consideration. --ceyockey 00:19, 22 July 2011 (EDT)
That looks great, thanks. At this point I think posting a link to the page from the watercooler is the best way to raise awareness. Someday we ought to do something better, but until we have a separate landing page for content issues, I think the watercooler is the best option. Would you mind posting the link?--Dallan 23:17, 30 July 2011 (EDT)

Proposal to deprecate [21 September 2011]

I just saw the proposal to deprecate this template. It seems to me they do two different things. This template links to GoogleMaps, whereas the new googlemap tag embeds the map directly onto the page. I am not sure that is what user User:Jrm03063 intended for his pages (it seems like he is the most common user of this template). --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:57, 21 September 2011 (EDT)

I'll point Jrm to this discussion.--Dallan 16:29, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
JBS66 is quite right. I don't generally want to embed a map on a page - not to mention that the existing template provides refinement of location information for person/family fact items. What is the rationale for getting rid of the existing behavior? Why can't they coexist? --jrm03063 17:13, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
I am also a user of the template. I don't see that it is the same as the new embedding. I would prefer to keep the template. I can't see why we would delete it. --Judy (jlanoux) 17:37, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
Ok, I'll copy this discussion over to WeRelate ToDo/Deprecated templates and recommend that we keep the template.--Dallan 09:28, 23 September 2011 (EDT)
