The two De Jong families joined the Cornelius Kuiper, Jan Yonker, Johannes Ambuul, Jan Bras, Pieter Dalenberg, Jan Ton, Klaas Dalenberg, Hark Eeningenberg, Leendert Vander Syde, Pieter Oudendijk, Cornelius Dalenberg and Cornelius Hoogendunk families on April 18, 1849 for the 48 day voyage to New York City. The party then traveled by boat on the Hudson River, canals, and the Great Lakes to Chicago, where they rented an unfurnished house.. The group had intended to settle at South Holland, Illinois, but their scouting party, on its return trip, bought 160 acres of good land, now Roseland, 20 miles nearer to Chicago. = Pieter was known as de Meester. He was the first schoolteacher in de Hooge Prairie and an Elder in the First Reformed Church of Roseland. = De 9 oprichters van Roseland Johannes Ambuul, Jacob de Jong, Pieter de Jong, Klaas Dalenberg, Pieter Dalenberg, Jan Jonker, Cornelis Kuijper, Jan Ton, Leendert van der Sijde = Jacob had 40 acres and built his home near 104th and Michigan Avenue. Pieter had 35 acres and built at 107th and Michigan.
