Scope [4 January 2010]
Are these resources literally supposed to be limited to "learning how to research" in the American colonies? Or resourced to help you with that research? The headers say the former, the contents of the current first section suggest the latter (which seems consistent with other research guides I looked at real quick).--Amelia 00:06, 2 January 2010 (EST)

- I don't think I'm the right one to ask, because I'm not sure I've ever used a guide online explaining how to research somewhere, I'm just not that kind of person. I would on the other hand be thrilled with knowing that the pages here list all the best research resources. For most other places, I don't think doing both is a big issue, as long as we stay away from county-specific information on state pages (etc.) because the pages will get too crowded. This page though is kind of a special case and could probably be filled up with useful information either way.
- There is also the question of overlap with the current place pages. They currently have a "Research Tips" section, which could also either be a how-to or a more direct link to research resources. I've put information on a number of them, but I don't know how common that is, and it may not be known what's there.--Amelia 10:14, 2 January 2010 (EST)
- I'm with you on the links to great research resources. An additional purpose of these pages for me is to strengthen community/collaboration, and this would be remarkably different from what other resource-compilations do. So it might be nice-- especially on such a page as this-- to list those of us who are actively researching colonial time frames. Jillaine 11:24, 2 January 2010 (EST)
I remain ambivalent about geographic research guides. The guidelines we came up with months ago was that if there were too many links for the place page, then link to a specific research guide page. But the more I work on Place pages (which are dominated by mostly irrelevant wikipedia content), the more I think that Place pages could really BE the Research Guides for places.
