Surname:Hubach

Watchers

The Hubach name, or at least this version of the spelling appears to have originated in Bavarian Germany as that is the earliest record uncovered to date. There are however some early records for Hubach's in Spain.

I don't understand why some of the names on the page are related, however Ubach is how my great grandfather pronounced the name which initially made it a little difficult to locate the family. In the 1500's in Wurtemburg there were names that sound similar, such as Huebach and Hewbach.

A Saxon meaning given for this surname and variations which sound the same is "the son (ock) of Hubert". The forename Hubert is a pre 9th Century compound personal name with the elements of "hug" meaning heart and "berht" - bright (Bright-heart).

The Dictionary of American Family Names (©2013, Oxford University Press) provides the following meanings.

  • German: from a pet form of a Slavic equivalent of Jacob.
  • German: habitational name from a lost place near Ahrweiler called Hubach.
  • Possibly an Americanized spelling of Czech Hubac, a nickname for a loud mouth, from huba ‘mouth’, ‘gob’.
