The GNIS is the master repository for geographical entity names used by the United States Federal Government. The Search interface is located at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/ . Individual records can be linked to by following instructions in supporting FAQ documents. In addition to the places covered noted in this Source's meta-data, which have been drawn from the 'State' dropdown menu in the GNIS Search Interface, there is also include "U.S. Minor Outlying Islands".

There are a small number of Sources which are derivatives of the GNIS, such as geographically restricted name sets (e.g. GNIS content for the state of California) which are stored and managed independently from the GNIS resource itself. As of 8 December 2010, these appear to consist of:
