Notes

The Hildebrandt map shows the location of properties purchased from Benjamin Borden prior to his death in 1743 in the area known as "Borden's Grant". This 92,100 acre grant roughly corresponds to modern Rockbridge County, Virignia, though some portions overlap into modern Augusta County. Each parcel shown is identified by owner, title date, and its size in acres. Because title to the property was not conveyed in many instances until well after Borden's death, the title dates range anywhere from about 1741 to 1765. The map is nominally dated "November 6, 1739". This is the date that the grant was made to Benjamin Borden. While the scale of the map is nominally 1 inch = 1 mile, the depiction of boundaries does not necessarily conform to that scale. In some cases, discrepancies are substantial. This may be because of errors in the original survey, or perhaps due to errors in the construction of the map. Hildebrandt acknowledge some of these problems, noting on the map itself that "The Thorn Hill area to the south is far too constricted to take up the land [purchased].
