The Lancaster VA Historical Society/Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library is a museum and historical archive in the Northern Neck of The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, United States. Its purpose is to preserve the history of Lancaster County, Virginia. It opened in 1958 and was named in honor of George Washington's mother, Mary Ball, a Lancaster County, Virginia native and granddaughter of the ca 1653 emigrant, William Ball I. Past curators of the Mary Ball Washington Museum include Thomas M. Thacker II, Cathy Currey, Sarah J. Walker, and Sonja Headley. The History and Genealogy Research Center is part of the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library complex located in the village of Lancaster, the county seat of Lancaster County, Virginia. The collection consists of well over 10,000 books, vertical files, microfilm, and periodicals. The collection is considered to be one of the best regional research centers in Virginia. It is heavily focused on Virginia history and Northern Neck genealogy, though the collection contains published materials on nearly every county in Virginia. It also has considerable material on Maryland and North Carolina. A nearly complete run of all major Virginia and Northern Neck periodicals are housed here. The online catalog is searchable by any search term. It is generally best used by limiting the search criteria to one or two key words. The catalog is continually being updated and as of October 2009 about 5,800 items of its total collection have been entered into the on-line catalog. Some of the over 1,000 family files have been scanned and are available in pdf format. This is and data entry of all all items is ongoing. The collection is non-circulating, though the volunteer staff accepts email look up requests and offers extended research services within the library's collection. Fees may apply.
