Wharfedale Rural District was located in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. It comprised the northern side of lower Wharfedale (the valley of the River Wharfe), the lower Washburn Valley and several parishes between Leeds County Borough and the River Wharfe. Interspersed between the small more rural civil parishes were the Urban Districts of Ilkley, Otley, Burley in Wharfedale and Baildon. In 1928 the civil parishes of Adel cum Eccup (#1 on map) and Alwoodley (#2 on map) were transferred into Leeds County Borough and in 1937 the detached area covered by the parishes of Esholt (#10), Hawksworth in Guiseley (#14) and Menston (#18) were merged with the urban district of Guiseley into a new urban district named Aireborough.

Wharfedale Rural District was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and split between Leeds Metropolitan Borough (southern parishes) and Harrogate District or Borough in the newly-formed administrative county of North Yorkshire (northern parishes). A number of the urban districts were absorbed into Leeds and Bradford Metropolitan Boroughs.
