Location

Walnut Grove Cemetery is located between Ridge Road on the south, Defiance Trail on the east, Route 309 access road on the west, and on the north by farmland. It is approximately two and one-half miles east of the city of Delphos.

Description & Information

The cemetery was fifteen acres, but the purchase of another 4.6 acres of farm land on the north allowed for needed expansion. The new section is called Defiance Trail Section and is divided into Subsections W, X, Y, Z. Also in 2002 purchased additional acreage.

Walnut Grove was chartered September 7, 1891, and is privately owned and operated by a Board of Trustees. The current President is Jim Dray and Secretary-Treasurer is Dave Higbea.

The original cemetery census was done in 1993 and that book is arranged by sections and rows. Every effort was made to print any information found on the tombstones. This index was compiled in March of 1997 and is arranged alphabetically. Many hundreds of names have been added due to burials, a search of death records and funeral home records. We sincerely hope that we have not left any name out; however, in a cemetery this size it is impossible to guarantee the accuracy of this large undertaking.

There are over 5400 names listed. Of these, one is a veteran of the War of 1812; 66 are Civil War Veterans (one killed in action); 140 veterans of World War I (two killed in action); 219 veterans of World War II (twelve killed in action); 26 Korean War Veterans (three killed in action); and 11 veterans of the Vietnam War (four killed in action).
