A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Troughend from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"TROUGHEND, a township in Elsdon parish, Northumberland; 7½ miles NNE of Bellingham. Acres: 26,010. Population: 262. Houses: 44."

Troughend was a township in the ancient parish of Elsdon and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Bellingham Rural District. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was split between the parishes of Otterburn and the newly-formed parish of Rochester.
