A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Totton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"TOTTON, a hamlet in the SW of Hants; on the Southampton and Dorchester railway, near the head of Southampton water, ¾ mile WSW of Redbridge. It has a post-office under Southampton, and a [railway] station."

A Vision of Britain through Time identifies Totton as one of many "manors" in the parish of Eling. The area is now the large civil parish of Totton and Eling in the New Forest District which was only formed in 1974.
