Thirsk Rural District was a large administrative division based on the town of Thirsk (#43 on map) and located at the southern edge of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Unusally, seven of the civil parishes were detached from the remainder of the rural district by a narrow part of another district. This area is bounded by the West Riding of Yorkshire.

There were no changes to the boundaries of Thirsk Rural District during its existence between 1894 and 1974. The area remained at 71,650 acres (28,996 hectares or 112 square miles). Its population grew from 12,710 in 1901 to 13,967 in 1961 with most of the growth occurring after the Second World War. The working population included 36% in agriculture and 38% in professional occupations in 1921. By 1951 agriculture only included 18%, professional 26% and "unclassified or unoccupied" accounted for 44%. (These statistics from A Vision of Britain through Time

With the municipal reorganization of 1974, the North Riding of Yorkshire became North Yorkshire and most of the West Riding of Yorkshire became West Yorkshire. North Yorkshire expanded down into the northeast part of what had been the West Riding. The administrative district so formed was named the Harrogate District and included some parishes from the North Riding (including the detached part of Thirsk Rural District) within its boundaries. The remainder of Thirsk RD were placed in the Hambleton District.

The two maps were produced to different scales. A list of all the parishes is given below.
