Thankerton was located in Covington parish and, for a time, the parish was known as Covington and Thankerton. It had a population of 329 in 1971. Since then its census population has been included in that for Strathclyde and South Lanarkshire. In the 19th century it had at least one cotton mill and later had a railway station.
