Orcheston is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, lying on Salisbury Plain less than a mile northwest of neighbouring Shrewton. The present-day parish combines the two former parishes of Orcheston St. Mary and Orcheston St. George and includes the hamlet of Elston.

The two civil parishes of Orcheston, based on the two Church of England parish churches of St Mary and St George, were united into a single civil parish in 1934 and into a single ecclesiastical parish in 1971.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Orcheston St. Mary from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"ORCHESTON-ST. GEORGE, a village and a parish in Amesbury [registration] district, Wilts. The village stands on Salisbury plain, 8 miles N E of [Wylye] [railway] station, and 12 S S E of Devizes; and has a post-office under Devizes. The parish contains also the hamlet of Elston, and comprises 2,363 acres. Real property, with Orcheston St. Mary: £3,480. Rated property of [Orcheston St. George] alone: £1,548. Population: 236. Houses: 48. The property is divided between two. The manor belongs to W. Linton, Esq. The parish is remarkable for the widely-known Orcheston grass. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury. Value: £600. Patron: Wadham College, Oxford. The church is of the 14th century, and in excellent condition; and has stained-glass windows. There is a national school."

  • The Victoria County History - Wiltshire does not have a volume on Heytesbury Hundred.
  • From this Ancestry page you can browse the Wiltshire parishes which have parish register transcripts online, quite often from very early dates. However, reading the early ones requires skill and patience. Transcriptions should also be in FamilySearch.
