Monroe Charter Township is a charter township of Monroe County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 14,568. The township is bordered by the city of Monroe to the north, but the two are administered autonomously. The township was organized in 1827 and named after James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States. Monroe Township is older than the Michigan land survey, which provides the traditional township numbering for the State of Michigan, so it cannot be usefully expressed in those terms. Michigan also has a township of the same name in Newaygo County. [edit] Research Tips
