The area covered by Mile End Registration District was situated in the middle of the tongue of land that projects southward where the River Thames takes a deep bend just to the east of the City of London. Stepney Registration District was located south of Mile End. By 1857 Stepney Registration District was considered too large in terms of population and needed to be split into sections. The number gained by Mile End Old Town Registration District on its initiation was over 56,000 (as measured by the census of 1851). The registration district was renamed Mile End Old Town Registration District, London when the metropolitan boroughs of the County of London began operation in 1901. In 1926 the registration district was abolished and rejoined with Stepney Registration District, London. The population at this time was over 100,000 (as measured by the census of 1921). One must remember that during this time the typewriter and the telephone had been invented, easing the workload of the registration district employees. These alterations are covered in full in the UKBMD review of Mile End Old Town Registration District.
The sub-districts listed describe parts of the parish of Mile End Old Town, the only parish covered by the registration district. Some small revisions to its boundaries with the parishes of Bethnal Green, Bromley by Bow and Bow occurred in 1901. |
