Mattishall Burgh was an ancient or ecclesiastical parish in the Mitford Hundred of Norfolk, England. It became a civil parish during the 19th century and from 1894 until 1935 was part of the Mitford and Launditch Rural District. In 1935 it was abolished and absorbed by the neighbouring parish of Mattishall.

Neither Wikipedia nor A Vision of Britain through Time has an article on Mattishall Burgh. GENUKI states that it is about 5 miles east of Dereham and provides a link to the Mattishall village website (which is the basis for the Wikipedia article on Mattishall and says nothing about Mattishall Burgh). William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845 can be viewed in GENUKI, but the transcription is copyrighted as are those in the equivalent gazetteers of 1854 and 1883. There is no explanation of the parish's name or why the two parishes continued to be separate until 1935.

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
