A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Marton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"MARTON, a township in Sinnington parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; on the river Rye, 4¾ miles W by S of Pickering. Acres: 640. Population: 243. Houses: 56. The manor belongs to the Rev. G. Wright. The township is a meet for the Sinnington hounds. A schoolroom is used fortnightly as a chapel of ease; and there are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Marton was located in Pickering Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Sinnington in the Pickering Lythe Wapentake. It was in the Pickering Registration District.
