A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Kingthorpe from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"KINGTHORPE, a township in Pickering parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; on the Whitby railway, 2 miles NE by E of Pickering. Acres: 2,760. Real property: £952. Population: 54. Houses: 6. The manor belongs to Colonel Fothergill."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Kingthorpe was located in Pickering Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Pickering in the Pickering Lythe Wapentake. It was also in the Pickering Registration District.
