Township of Kickapoo

Kickapoo is a civil township situated in the northeastern corner of the county of Leavenworth, state of Kansas, United States of America. It is bounded on the north by the county of Atchison (including the township of Walnut), on the east by the state of Missouri (including the county of Platte and townships of Weston, Fair and Lee) and city of Leavenworth, on the south by the township of High Prairie, on the southwest by the township of Alexandria), and on the west by the township of Easton. The Missouri river forms part of the eastern boundary.

History

Kickapoo was one of the five original civil townships erected at a meeting of the county commissioners on 7 September 1855 after the county was erected the preceding month. It was named after the Kickapoo tribe who occupied it as part of their reservation. The new civil township encompassed parts of townships 7 and 8 south, of ranges 21, 22 and 23 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian. By an act of the legislature in 1864, the name of Kickapoo township and town was changed to Steuben, but the original name was restored by the legislature on 25 February 1867.

Boundaries

The boundaries were originally defined:

Beginning at the northern boundary line of the county, thence down the Missouri river to the warehouse at Fort Leavenworth; thence west, along the military road running from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Riley, to Stranger creek; thence up said creek to the northern line of the county; thence east, along the northern line of the county, to the place of beginning.

With the creation of Wyandotte county, the Leavenworth county board reorganized the townships, effective 28 February 1859, and the south and west boundaries of Kickapoo were redefined. Some territory has since been annexed by the city of Leavenworth.
