Thomas Hiscock was the first to discover gold in the Ballarat goldfields in 1851. "Hiscocks" could refer to a mine with the name, or the general area near where there is now a monument (the coordinates for this place refer to this obelisk's location).

Several old sources refer to a place of the name "Hiscocks"... unsure where it is at this time except that it is near Buninyong.
