Many Clarks in Orange County [15 April 2011]

I noticed the "poss. Orange County" by the 1738 birth date. Don't know what is leading to this conclusion, but I happen to be aware of a William Clark similar to this description who is not the William of this page. So, just fyi, Source:Virginia, United States. Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 1607-1800 (144610), p. 2:92: Clark, William, Jr., s/o William Clark and Ann (James), b. 1739, d. 1815, m. Sarah Wharton. Essentially the same information was printed in Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. VIII, p. 33.

Of course, the Clarks are impossibly numerous. A website at uvirginia.edu that traced the genealogy of Lewis and Clark (unrelated to above) said there were 2,422 head of households named Clark in the 1790 census, making it extremely difficult to trace the Clark ancestry. The grandfather of the Orange County William was Edward Clark, but even in the 1700 timeframe there were three Edward Clarks in Orange County. --Jrich 11:44, 12 April 2011 (EDT)

Hello Jrich, the source of his birthplace was a Familysearch submission, which I added to his parent's family page, which has his birthplace as "Augusta County", which in 1738 did not exist and was then part of Orange County, Virginia. If you have more credible information on this family, feel free to add it to their pages.

Best regards,

Jim
