Civil War [12 June 2011]

Ok, thoughts on Thomas and the Civil War. According to Sallie's widow's pension Thomas served the last two years of the was with Co. K Randal's Reg. 28th Division Dismounted Cavalry, Walker's Division. The problem is there is not a name anywhere close to Thomas Johnston on their muster roles.

Did Sallie put that information? It handwriting make it look like it was added later. There is another place in the widow's pension that states 'no proof', where they referring to his enlistment? Did they pick this because it is where most of Panola county went? Or did Sallie tell them and was mistaken for the regiment her father and brother-in-laws were in?

Also there is the fact that the other sons of Moses Johnston served in Louisiana. Thomas was 14 when the war started, and 18 when it was over. It does seem more logical that he signed up mid-war. I know there were lots of boys that signed up young. But in a house with several big brothers leaving, he would have been needed at home. The group the Johnston brothers signed up for surrendered in July of 1863. Did they fight again? was the fact that they were home enough for Thomas to sign up? Did he sign up in Texas?

Lots of questions, curious what others think.--EeVas 17:07, 12 June 2011 (EDT)

Why Mesquite? [14 June 2011]

I am going through old emails and thoughts. One of my early questions is what got Thoams to Panola co, and then to Mesquite, TX? Well, the Panola co., has been answered, he moved to the general area as a child. But the Mesquite still has not.--EeVas 13:24, 14 June 2011 (EDT)
