The son of Moses Johnston and Elizabeth Cummings, Thomas Jefferson Johnston was born in Georgia, but raised in Louisiana and Texas.
He fought as a teenager in the Civil War, as did his brothers. He lost one brother during the Siege of Vicksburg.
After the war he returned to East Texas. He met Texas native Sarah 'Sallie' Hill in Panola co. They married on December 6th 1868.
For the next 20 years he worked as an itinerant farmer, at first moving up and down the Texas-Louisiana border and then sometime in the early 80s he moved to North Texas.
In 1888 he settled his family outside of Mesquite Village, buying a homestead. He lived there until his death in 1903.
He was buried in Old Bennett Gardens. His wife, all six of their adult children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren would be buried in the cemetery.
