Robert Scott's 1740 importation [29 July 2020]

As you know, the record of Robert's 1740 importation states, "Robert Scott made oath that he imported himself, Ann his Wife, Mary, George, & Esther Scott & Robert Frazer, from Ireland into Philadelphia & from thence into this Colony at his own Charges & that this is the first time of proving his and their rights in order to obtain Land which is ordered to be certified."

All available evidence suggests that George and Mary named in the record are not Robert's children, but instead they are his brother George and sister-in-law Mary.

Furthermore, many people seem to believe that the Robert Frazer listed in the record was either the father or brother of Robert's wife Ann, but there is in fact a record in Chalkley which proves the relationship between Robert Frazer, Robert and Ann Scott:

"1815... Jacob Scott deposes, at his home in Rockingham, he is 70 years old. When he was 20 years old he recalls that his half-brother lived then in a cabin on land now owned by Jno. Mohler on South River, near a cave then called Hannah’s Cave, since known as Madison’s Cave… Deed, 18th February, 1746, Thompson to Wm. Beard, tract called Cave Bottom, 100 acres Deed, 15th July, 1753, by Beard to Robert Frazer, conveys above… Deed, 3d July, 1771, by Robert Frazor to Benj. Yearby (Yearly), 100 acres." [Chalkley, Vol. II, pp. 264-265]

Jacob was a son of Robert and Ann Scott. In this record he states that his half-brother lived in Cave Bottom when Jacob was 20 (abt 1764). The deed record, which is included in the Chalkley quote above and which can be verified separately shows that Robert Frazer owned the tract called Cave Bottom at that time. Thus, Robert Frazer was the half-brother to whom Jacob was referring, and that would mean that Robert Frazer was born to Ann prior to her marriage to Robert Scott. The most likely scenario is that Ann (maiden name unknown) was married to a Frazer who then died, probably in Northern Ireland, and she remarried to Robert Scott.

By the way, I have several updates for Robert's brother, Samuel Scott who was my 6th great grandfather. We chatted about him several years ago, in fact.--Drwsctt 17:50, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
