Person talk:Mary Byington (1)

Mary's birth date [27 August 2016]

found this record in Barbour:

Branford VRs Vol. 3: BYINGTON, BOYINGTON, BYINTON, BYINTUN Mary, d. John & Jane, b. Jan. 8, 1709/10 (3:35)

Looks like it's for this Mary, but not 100% on it - father's name matches is about all I can link. Thoughts?--Frank 12:10, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Don't have any particular knowledge of this family, don't know why 1702 was put as her birth, except that it would be a reasonable estimate, or simply because it is Moses' birthyear. Birth location could be an assumption based on marriage location, perhaps not actual. Would think 1709/10 is a little young to be marrying in 1726 but this father would appear to be the John Byington of Branford (second husband of Jane (Westover) Swayne). Found one secondary source that says John Byington is really John Boynton; one that says brother John b. 1700, Mary b. 1702, brother Robert b. 1704 (records say twins David and Jonathan b. 1702); and one that says she died age 30 (apparently using the 1709/10 birth). Have fun! --Jrich 14:36, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
The 1849 Foote Genealogy (Nathaniel Goodwin) says the following on page 179: "Moses Foote, first of Branford, (Conn.,) afterwards of Waterbury, in the same State, was twice married. 1. To Mary Byington, daughter of John Byington, of Branford, June 22, 1726. She died January, 1740, aged 30." Since there appears to be no evidence of another John Byington (Byintun, Boyington, Byanton, Boynton) anywhere in Connecticut this early, and the date of Mary's death, as reported by Nathaniel Goodwin is consistent with a birth in 1709/10, I'd conclude that it was almost certain that Moses Foote's wife Mary was born as indicated by the Branford vital records; her marriage at 16 1/2 would be somewhat unusual but certainly not unheard of. What was the secondary source that said she was born in 1702?--jaques1724 17:19, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
[1] Genealogy of Dr. John Butler, William Boynton or Byington and allied families by Opal Hinsey White, p. 102. Don't have full access but suspect as above, it is only assumption based on Moses' own data. --Jrich 17:46, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. By the way, your identification of John's wife Jane pointed me towards the evidence for that identification, the Westover article in TAG, and more importantly the record of her mother's probate in Manwaring.
