Caernarvonshire, Caernarfon and Carnarvon[shire]

Caernarvonshire is the name of an historic county of Wales. It was absorbed into Gwynedd in 1974 along with the historic counties of Anglesey and Merionethshire. Since we employ placenames as they existed in 1900, we use Caernarvonshire for places in this county. We never shorten the names of historic counties.

Caernarfon is the name of the town that was the county town of Caernarvonshire.

Carnarvon Registration District covered the county of Caernarvonshire between 1837 and 1937. (The name must have been made up by someone who did not understand Welsh.) Records obtained from the Free BMD Index only give the name of the registration district but, if you apply and pay for a certificate, you will receive the address at which the birth, marriage or death took place. If you have a certificate, its number should be quoted along with the details under "Sources".
