The Wives of John Moss and John Charles [1 December 2011]

We know from at least two pieces of documentary evidence that John Moss was brother-in-law of John Charles. That would require either that Moss married a sister of Charles or that Charles married a sister of Moss or that they married a pair of sisters. As far as I can tell from a literature search, there is no evidence pointing in one direction or the other. We also have one tidbit indicating that the baptismal name of John Charles' wife was perhaps "Sarah." I see no evidence of a baptismal name for the wife of John Moss. I am looking for other opinions, but my inclination would be to call both wives "Unknown" based on this discussion.

From the Boardman Genealogy (p. 230), "The name of the wife of John Moss has not been determined. In 1648 he was attorney for his " brother-in-law," John Charles, a seafaring man who lived in Branford and Saybrook. Possibly her maiden name was Charles or they married sisters."

From Families of Ancient New Haven:

Charles, John, of NH, rem. to Bd, d 1673 m ----- ----- (probably sister of John Moss). [II:391]
Moss, John , b c. 1604, d 1707 æ. 103 (WT1 [Center Street Cemetery, Wallingford]; Cpl; m ----- -----.

From Torrey (CD ROM version) - neither man mentioned in the third supplement; I have not seen the new three volume set.
