Person talk:John Folsom (1)

All Mixed Up [18 January 2011]

According to the cited source, published in 1882, the parents of John Folsom (#16) were Peter Folsom and Susanna Cousins or Coffin, not John Folsom and Abigail Perkins as shown here. It does list wives as Hannah Gilman and Sarah Lyford, but the second one is marked with a question mark and it notes his wife at death was Mary.

According to the newer Source:Folsom, Elizabeth Knowles. Genealogy of the Folsom Family : A Revised and Extended Edition, Including English Records 1638-1938, p. 91, John Folsom, s/o Peter Folsom and Susanna Cousins, b 1685?, d. 1757, m. (1) Sarah Lyford, m. (2) Mary (Eastman) Burley, has children Mary, Peter as shown here, but no Joseph, and Elizabeth is listed as born about 1715, not aft 1723.

According to the newer source, p. 73, the John Folsom who was son of John Folsom and Abigail Perkins was b. 1680, d. 1724/5 and m. Mary Sewall.

There is no John Folsom listed in the newer source who married a Hannah Gilman. I was having trouble finding a Hannah Gilman born early enough to be this person which caused this investigation of the Folsom side.

The newer source appears to cite many primary documents and would appear more reliable than the old source. Obviously further research is needed to resolve this with confidence, but it appears that at the minimum, the parentage of John Folsom is incorrect on this page. --Jrich 10:15, 18 January 2011 (EST)

I'm happy to defer to your analysis. Would you please make sure all the sources are cited and that you add specific notes indicating those that seem defective? Since I got a bunch of this from ancestry, it's a certainty that we're dealing with some widely held misconceptions.

I was just trying to place the Hannah Gilman because I wanted to get rid of that awful WFT Est on her page, and I thought perhaps enough of the Gilman family was in WeRelate to do this. I have no particular knowledge of the Folsom family and have other work calling me right now, so am not particularly interested in taking on a new family right now. There are too many John and Peter Folsoms to make this particular straightforward to do properly. So this is meant as more of an advisory to future readers that this page seems messed up and needs fixing than an assertion that I have the answer. --Jrich 12:18, 18 January 2011 (EST)
