Jan de Maar looks a whole lot like John H. Van Dam in America as found in the census and the migenweb listings for Valley City Cemetery:

     b.Nov.03,1863; d.June 08,1890

In the 1870 census John is listed after Harm; could the 'H' be the patronymic for Harm?
