Conflicting information on this James Berry [25 March 2009]

Thought I'd share this Rootsweb post regarding this James Berry, it may help other researchers unscramble his family based upon other conflicting information (assuming the contributor is correct, of course):

Marie, I am replying to your message to the Berry list dated 4/1/99. Sorry for the delay. This is really just a query and I apologize if it is a rather vague one. I have been trying to trace the ancestry of my gggggrandfather, a David Berry, who was a well established landowner in Butts Co GA by 1830. I believe that I have traced him to Jones Co GA in 1820, where I also find a James and a Robert Berry in that county at that time. Per census records, David was born in SC around 1770 (possibly 1780). The similarity in names with your information is striking, although they are, granted, rather common names. David had one son, names John V., and his oldest daughter was named Elizabeth Charlotte. I guess I am just asking if you know whether any of the Berrys that you were discussing or any of their related lines ending up migrating into SC? Do you have any information that might link my David with the Berrys that you discuss? Thank you for any assistance that you may provide. I apologize again for this shot in the dark approach, but I figure its worth a try. I'm not getting anywhere any other way!

Hi Berry Cousins,

These Berry's are from Augusta Co., VA and Washington Co., VA in the 1700's and early 1800's.

A controversy of James Berry, the son of Thomas Berry b. 1718 d. Will probated 20 Aug 1799 had two wives FNU Buchanan and Esther McClure Ward and who James married.

One line says James Berry married Jane Doak, daughter of Samuel Doak, had sons Thomas, James and Samuel, who married Nancy Crow, and the other (my line) says he married Elizabeth McCutcheon daughter of James and Grisel (Campbell) McCutcheon, I have documented proof of the court records through marriage records, land transactions, Wills and Probated Estate Administors. I have proof that the James Berry that married Elizabeth McCutcheon, is the son of Thomas Berry. Samuel Doak's daughter Jane married William Brown as you will see in the following records. James Berry, who married Jane Doak, daughter of David and Jennet/Jane Doak, is probably the son of Charles and Mary (Cunningham) Berry by the naming pattern of the children of this union.

I would love to hear from anyone of these two lines of James Berry of Virginia in the 1700's and early 1800's.

Would love to hear from any of these two lines. The other line says their proof comes from Thomas Berry's Bible and Susanna (Berry) McChesney papers. Does anyone have a clue where this proof is?

Have a good day,
