Note: Palatine connection for Elizabeth Miller is wrong [3 March 2015]

There are a couple of sources, particularly in Ontario/Bay of Quinte research which assign Elizabeth Miller as the daughter of the UEL Garret Miller (1738-1825) and Elizabeth Switzer (1754-1837). These are not correct. For one, the dates are impossible as Elizabeth Miller Roblin Canniff was born about 1754. Her father was Garret Miller but her mother was Patience, and her father was a patriot, not a loyalist and was specifically located in Smith's Clove (now Monroe), Orange County, NY. The source of the error is very likely an assumption based on proximity compounded by a statement by her husband Philip Roblin (or an assumption transcribed into the proceedings) of the land commission that her father was a loyalist (Philip could have easily been aware that a Garret Miller UEL was in the area and that his wife's father's status as a patriot who died in a British POW camp might negatively affect their claim). Elizabeth never made a claim as the daughter of a loyalist.

Incorrect sources:

  • The romance of the Palatine Millers, a tale of Palatine Irish-Americans and united empire loyalists.
