Winifred Eleanor Wilson was born in the southern suburbs of Manchester in 1886, the eldest of three children of a furniture dealer named Ernest Henry Wilson and his wife Christina Ralston. Between 1888 and 1891 the family moved from south Manchester to the Pendleton area of adjoining Salford. No trace has yet been found of Winifred's father after 1891.

By 1901 Winifred was living with her mother and siblings in the Everton area of Liverpool and she was working as a cashier in a draper's shop. Winifred has yet to be researched after 1901, although she was clearly still alive in 1911 as her mother reported in the 1911 census that all her children were still living.
