William Woods was born in 1809 in St. Clair County, Illinois. His parents, John Woods II and Delilah Hill, were some of the earliest settlers in the area. They made their home in Scott Township in the Turkey Hill settlement. William married Melinda Scott in 1830. In 1831, William Woods joined other men from his area to fight in the Black Hawk War in 1831. He joined the company of Captian Solomon Miller in June 1831 and discharged in July 1831 in Rock Island, Illinois.
