John Woods was most likely born in 1778-9 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His father, John Walker "Woods", had refused to join the British and fought instead on the side of the colonists in the War of the Rebellion. After the war, young John and family settled in Ohio. By 1808, at age 30, John Woods had moved out to the Illinois Territory and settled in Turkey Hill, a prominent trading post in St. Clair County, Illinois.
