Facts and Events
Memories of J. Fred Reeve: He and Dad worked at the Zeta Tau Alpha house all4 years (Mom joined the sorority as a sophomore). Uncle Fred washed the dishes all 4 years. Dad started out tending the furnace and was promoted to waiting on tables. They got all their meals free too. They both had scholarships. Dad kept such good records that he informed Fred they'd spent $1,000 for all 4 years of college. he would get a haircut every 3 weeks and check his financial records to see if it was time for another one. Mom and Dad asked Uncle Fred to go with them when they decided to go to a movie together in downtown Urbana (the movies showed in Champaign first, then Urbana a week later). It was their first date. On the way home they passed the house Fred and Dad lived in, and Fred tried to duck out so Dad and Mom could walk on to ZTA alone, but they wouldn't let him. Aunt Margaret Cooke bought them excursion tickets to the Chicago World's Fair. Fred, Dad and Abie Hurt (who was 4 years younger) went up one day, spent all day at the Fair and came back the third day. Uncle Fred and Dad often wondered why they took Abie instead of one of the other Hurt brothers. Betty Kendall remembered when Dad's army unit went through town (probably between 1937-9). Barry closed the school so all the kids could go watch them drive down Route 36. From a letter dated May 11, 1958 from Bruce Palmer to Clara Palmer Gambill: He was graduated from the Barry High School and later was graduated from the University of Illinois about 1935 or 1936. He was the top or next to top man in the ROTC at U of Ill. and through this he entered the regular Army. At the present time he is in charge of establishing launching sites for the Army's Nike missile about the Chicago area. Vivian Villiger Meyer wrote "Bill was a freshman at the University of Illinois in 1934, my last year there. I lived in the ZTA House, where Bill tended the furnace, so I knew Bill before Marion ever met him the next year." Undated newspaper article: Lieut. W.W. Watson, former officer in Camp Kemmerer CCC, was a local visitor Sunday, enroute to Jackson on a hunting excursion. Lieut. Watson is now second in command of the Malta, Idaho camp.
