William Ward's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 1st December 1773 when he was married to Sarah Lister in the town of Grantham in Lincolnshire. At the time of their marriage William was described as being a labourer, 26 years old and living in Somerby, a parish to the south-east of Grantham. After their marriage they had two children baptised in Somerby, before moving to Belton, about three miles north of Grantham, where they had a third child baptised in 1779.

They then moved again to Great Hale, about seventeen miles east of Belton. William was buried there on 14th December 1783, aged 37. Sarah survived him by nearly forty years, and remarried in 1786.
