My research is not finished on this part of the TARRANTs. Some of the information does not "jive". Robert BUTLER, Sr. has documents that show a Carter TARRANT with children: Bud, not married, no children; Tobe, had 5 girls; Walter; Beauregard, known as "Tiny" died; Benjamin, not married, no children, died; Grace; Mittie, probably married someone named CHERRY; and George Leonard.

The 1782-1787 Virginiga Taxpayer list shows Carter TARRANT poll 1; slaves 9.

There is a Francis TARRANT in the 1790 census - north side of Tanner's Creek list of Jno. WILLOUGHBY 1785 pg. 94; 4 white souls, 1 dwelling.

On the 1810 census I found Carter listed on the schedule of the number of persons in the division allotted to Francis FOSTER; Borough of Norfolk. He is listed head of family with free white males, 1 under 10; 1 10-16; 1 26-45; free white females, 1 26-45 and 3 slaves.

The 1859 Norfolk City Directory shows William C. Tarrant as a carpenter with his home at 40 Bute.

Civil War: I have found a W. C. Tarrant, company E, 54 Virginia Militia, confederate, E. C. Robinson, Colonel, formed in Norfolk City. I don't know if this is my William. There is also a William C Tarrant; Company C; Cohoon's Battalion, Virginia Infantry.

2009-Jim Tarrant of VA thinks the line may be: Joseph Tarrant = 1 son, Leonard = 2 sons Leonard, the loyalist went to NY and then Canada; 2nd son, Captain Francis Tarrant = at least 1 son, my William C Tarrant

2009-there is an 1830 census for Francis; an 1840 census for Mary Tarrant; an 1850 census for Mary Tarrant, 55 [born 1795]; with Francis, 34 [born 1816-possibly William's brother] Ann, 26; Eleazor, 7, male; Mary E, 4

2009-I have attached, under "media" 4 pages from deed book notes [abstracts] - the copies are from Charlie Tarrants, see his website at http://faculty.delhi.edu/tarrancb/tarrants.htm - they show several mentions of Francis Tarrant, Mary Tarrant, Wm Tarrant and Rebecca Tarrant

2009-I found the following marriages for Francis Tarrant: Princess Anne Co: Francis Tarrant and Ann Claiborn, 14 Dec 1781. Norfolk Co: Francis Tarrant and Elizabeth Sweney, 9 Mar 1792; Francis Tarrent and Polly Terry, 27 Dec 1815

2009-email from Charlie Tarrants: William Carter Tarrant is the youngest son of Capt. Francis Tarrant and Mary (Polly) Terry [married 27 Dec 1815]. Their first son was Francis [born 1816] who can be found living with his mother at the 1850 Norfolk Census. Their second son was Leonard who died at about age 11. Captain Francis apparently had a son Carter from his first marriage. He can be found at the 1810 Norfolk census but must have died soon after. If he had children they must have been daughters for no son can be traced to him. The second marriage apparently produced either no male children.

I think you have the lineage slightly confused. The earliest of your line that I know about is Leonard of Warwick County VA (no longer exists). He had son Carter who was wealthy and left a will in Norfolk in 1784 [the problem with this is it would indicate that Carter died about 11 yrs before Francis is born, assuming Francis is born about the same time as his wife, Mary (Polly), 1795]. He had two sons: 1) Leonard the Loyalist who was disinherited in Carter's will and Francis (your ancestor).
