Facts and Events
George can get very confusing - it appears that most of the time he is living with his mother, Rebecca F (Balsum) Tarrant, in Norfolk, VA. Why he and Ruth go to Washington, DC for the birth of at least 3 of their children is unknown at this time. Why is Ruth in Washington, DC at the time of her death and where is George? The 1860 census shows George, age 10, living at Merchants Hotel with his parents, William C. and Rebecca F. - see William's file for 1860 census details. The 1870 census shows George, age 20, living with his mother, Rebecca, 4th Ward of the City of Norfolk near the female orphans asylum - see Rebecca's file for 1870 census details. There is another 1870 census that shows George at age 18, living with the Bolsom [Balsum] family-M593, roll 1666, pg 210, VA, Norfolk, Ward 3, pg 80, 27 July 1870, lines 31-40 and then line 1 on the next page. Benjamin Bolsom, 31, brickmason, Everyone in the house is listed as being born in VA. Wife, Martha E, 29, keeping house. Sarah, 70. William Tarrant, 21, brick mason. George Tarrant, 18, app. to brick mason. Fanny Johnson, 40, black, all the black people are listed as domestic servt. Edward Johnson, 11. Sally Bolsom, 70, black. Elsie Bolsom, 16, black. Sally Bolsom, 17, black. Next page is: Alice Bolsom, 28, black, house servant. 1872 - marriage certificate The 1880 census shows George living at 324 Church Street, 4th Ward, Norfolk, Norfolk County, VA. He is age 30 and a brick mason born in VA. At the time of the census his wife, Ruth, is 28 and they have three children, Zola, 7; James, 3; and Harry, 8 months. 1888 Norfolk City Directory shows George to be a bricklayer living at 24 Reservoir Avenue. 1890 Washington, DC City Directory shows George L Tarrant, mason, 1236 Wylie, NE, Washington, DC 1891 Washington, DC City Directory shows George Tarrant, bricklayer, 31 K St., NE, Washington, DC The 1900 census shows George living at Brambleton Avenue, 5th Ward, Norfolk City, again with his mother, Rebecca. However, this census shows George to have been born 1866 and is age 34. I thought maybe instead of "son" it should be "grandson" referring to George's son, George, but he would be only 17 in 1900 having been born in 1883, according to my records. See Rebecca's file for census details. George's death in 1906 is family tradition. I have been unable to find any death record.
