Facts and Events
Widow's Application for Pension #16564, by Laura H. Stuart, Smith County, Texas, 1909, show that William served as a private, Company K, 10th Missouri Cavalry, CSA. He enlisted Dec 25, 1861 at Springfeld, Missouri and surrendered at New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26, 1865. He was paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana on June 8, 1865. Laura states that they were married in Wood County, Texas on December 6, 1866 and that she was born Nov 21, 1847 in Harrison County, Texas. There was a statement by S.J. Stuart (Stephen James) of Rains County, stating that they were brothers and that they served together during the war. There was also a statement by N.E. Phillips, age 70 living in Mineola, Wood Co., Texas, who stated that he knew William Stuart since 1855 in Oceola, Missouri, which is probably about the time that William and his family moved from Tennessee to Missouri. I believe that Mr Phillips is Nathan E. Phillips, born Apr 1839 in either Tennesse (1900 Census of Mineola, Wood County) or Missouri (1860 Census of Osceola, St. Clair, Missouri). Mr. Phillips states that he also served with William, but I have not been able to find his name on any of the rosters. C.E. Hall and H.R. Stuart (Charles Edward Hall and Herbert Rosser Stuart, Laura's son-in-law and son) stated that they knew Laura to be the widow of said William Stuart and that she was a citizen of Texas since prior to Mar 1, 1880. Laura also states that William died Mar 13, 1902 in Smith County. Laura was approved for a pension and an Application for Mortuary Warant stated that she died on Dec 30, 1925 at the home of her daughter Mrs. M.O.
