"Michael Stoops, a native of Penn. and a farmer, early settled in Ohio and in his 17th year married Eleanor Van Sickle. They had nine children, the eldest of whom was [William]...born Jan 1815 in Hamilton Co., O. Mr. Michael Stoops in 1836 came to Fulton County. In early days Mr. Stoops suffered the extreme privations of frontier life. The first two winters the bill of fare for the family was hominy and venison; the wife's dress was linsey-woolsey; the man's, buckskin. They had to get their groceries in Lewistown on credit and that was very difficult. Milling was almost impossible and the noted grater had to be used. Mr. Wm Stoops first wife was Hannah Lyndsay, who died 1852: they had eight children. His second wife was a Miss Keziah Clark, who died 1860: they had 5 children. His third wife, now living, was Mr[s] Margaret Wentworth of Kentucky, daughter of William Hannah. They were married in 1862 and their children are four." {History of Fulton County, 1879, p. 929, <www.heritageQuest.com>, 28 Dec 2007}

 "Mr. Stoops was thrice married. His first wife was formerly Hannah Lindsay, who became the mother of eight children, but one of them is living: Mrs. William M. Guthrie of Vermont...Mr. Stoops subsequently married Keziah Clark...of this union there were five children, two of whom are living: Mrs. William Holmes of Auburn, Nebraska; and B. C. Stoops of Vermont township. The third Mrs. Stoops was Mrs. Margaret (Hannah) Wentworth, daughter of William Hannah, and of this union there were four children, two of whom are living: Dr. P. H. Stoops and Professor R. O. Stoops, of Jacksonville, Ill. Mrs. Margaret Stoops died in June 1892." {History of Fulton County Illinois, 1905, <www.heritageQuest.com>, 28 Dec 2007}"
