According to Joseph Russell Shepherd in MY ANCESTRY, "My father by trade was a boot and shoemaker, following the trade of his father. . . Father married when he was but a young man, twenty-two years of age, my mother being but eighteen years old. . ."
Marriage date also given as 1 May 1850.
From Arthur Shepherd, American Composer by Richard Loucks:
"William was a man of strict integrity and independent character, with an inherent ability to make a living from the opportunities he encountered in the new country. He was a phoographer and an accountant, with marked artistic and musical interests. He also developed an interest in public affairs that led him to serve as a justice of the peace and eventually a member of the Idaho State Legislature. In 1897 he moved his family to Salt Lake City. He was still active in 1944 when, at the age of ninety, a reporter described him as 'the little, white-haired man with the impish smile and sparkling wit.' He had become so skilled in watercolor painting, which was his hobby, that he had attained some prominence in salt Lake City art circles. He died in 1945."
