He enlisted as a Quartermaster Sergeant on 16 December 1863 in Company K, 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Wisconsin. He transferred from Company K to Company S, and was promoted to Full Quartermaster Sergeant, on 16 February 1865. He mustered out on 15 November 1865 in Austin, TX.
