From Daniel Scarborough Hoyle (e-mail: SCARHOUY@@aol.com):

Hi saw your query on the genforum. William Scarborough who died in 1675/6 in Surry co Va was hanged for his role in Bacons Rebellion. From "Historical Southern Families Vol lll" by John B Bodie, He was the first Scarborough in Surry Co. and was the Ancestor to the Scarborough 's of Surry. He was a cousin of Col. Charles Scarborough of Eastern Shore Md., son of Col Edmund Scarborough of Eastern Shore. He married Amy Holdsworth, who had a daughter named Ann Holdsworth plus, son Walter Holdsworth, and Mary Holdsworth who were William's step children.

The Children of William and Amy were 1. Edward, 2. William, Jr., 3. Mary, who married Duggard.

William Scarborough , Jr. married Sarah, and they had the following children: William, lll, John, Thomas, Edward, David, and Samuel. Daughters were : Jane and Sarah.

William Jr.'s sons Samuel and John married Kendall sisters. Brothers married sisters.

I am descended from Samuel Sr. through his son John who married Sarah Horton. Their son Daniel Scarborough was my GGGgrandfather who my father was named for. I am Daniel Scarborough Hoyle Jr.

My information is from Historical Southern Families, by Bodie and The Descendants of Samuel Scarborough Sr. of North Carolina., published by the Scarborough Family of N.C. A Committee.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Daniel Scarborough Hoyle Nashville, Tn.

William had a daughter (note: actually GRANDdaughter), first name unknown who married Daniel Duggard,in addition to his two sons through his marriage to a widow, Amy Holdsworth. He was hung by the Colonial Governor of Virginia as a participant in Bacon's Rebellion. I am a descendent of his son William [d.1736 at his home on the Isle of Wight - later Southampton], married Sarah. They had four children of whom David [d. 1773/1774?]was in my line, who with wife Sarah had four children of whom Addison [b.1754, d.1831]was my forefather. David moved to Town Creek in Edgecombe County NC in 1762. His son Addison, in my line, married Josie Howell and moved to South Carolina, Sumter District in about 1784 at a place two miles east of Manville on the Wisacky Road. He established a Scarborough cemetary on his property which still exists. He and Josie had 14 children of whom Henry [b.7/30/1780; d.9/6/1857] was my antecedent. Henry with wife Frances Stuckey [who lived to age 94!], had in excess of 27 children of whom J Zimmerman, who was married to Elizabeth Croswell daughter of James, was my antecedent. Their son Henry Gilbert[b.2/12/1832,d.6/7/1899] was my great grandfather. Henry married Maria A. Rogers in Bishopville on Nov 30, 1865. Their son, William Rogers [b,2/15/1877;d.1/30/1933] was my grandfather. His wife[md. 1/9/1901] was Rosa Clarendon Mood, dtr. of Rev. Wm. Wynn Mood. Rogers,as he was called, and wife Rosa lived in Bishopville SC, the same area where his great, great, great grandfather Addison set up shop in SC. However, in the late 1920's they and their two children, Harriet Mood and Claude Mood, moved to Columbia. Their son and my father Claude M., Sr.married Gelene Armor Stallworth of Mobile Alabama. I have one brother, Nicholas Eugene Stallworth Scarborough [named for my mother's father]. I have one son, Claude III now of Atlanta, and my brother has three sons, Nicholas II and Mikell, residents of Charleston, SC,and William, resident of Columbia. I have three great nephew Scarboroughs, three daughters, and two grand nieces all SC residents.

From Family Tree Maker page: Descendants of Edward Doty:

Of interest is the origin of the name "Scarborough." It is derived from a Viking warrior, named Skarit, who invaded Scotland and set up a holding on the eastern coast. A village grew nearby and was called "Skaritboro" which eventually became "Scarborough." It is this village that is sung about in the song "Scarborough Fair."

I have been unable to find positive connections between Ichabod and the Scarborough family described in SOUTHERN KITH AND KIN, V. 2, pp 37-50, but I feel sure that this is the Scarborough family from which Ichabod descends. The family of William Scarborough settled in Surry County, Virginia around 1650 and descendants of this family moved into Georgia about 1790. Two brothers, Samuel and Shadrack Scarborough are listed as grantees of land in Burke County, Georgia from 1790 through 1797 (see THE FAMILIES OF BURKE COUNTY, GEORGIA, 1755-1855, a Census, by Robert Scott Davis, Jr. and Rev. Silas Emmett, Jr., 1981, p. 212.)

We are looking for the same information. William Scarborough of Surry, VA born before 1636, married Amy (widow of Walter Holdsworth) hanged for part in Bacon's Rebellion 16 March 1677. Old family charts with no documentation report him to be a first cousin to Sir Charles. These charts suggest William to be the son of either Henry, jr., Samuel, or John Scarborough. These three and Edmond (Bapt. 1584 England - Died 1634 Virginia), father of Charles, are shown as sons of Henry Skarborowgh (Scarborough) of North Walsham, County Norfolk, England [Baptised 21 January 1565 - Died 24 August 1617] and Mary Huberstone of Loddon, County Norfolk, England.
